Life is inherently without pain.
Life is inherently without worries; it's only when the fire of desire is ignited that worries knock on your heart's door.
Life is inherently without pain; it's only when you start calculating gains and losses, and greedily seeking more, that pain comes to haunt you.
Once upon a time, there was a millionaire whose worries and anxieties were as numerous as his wealth. Therefore, he was always frowning, rarely showing a smile.
Next door to the millionaire lived a young couple who made tofu. There's a saying that life has three great hardships: blacksmithing, boat rowing, and tofu making. But this young couple who made tofu were happy, their songs, laughter, and playful banter constantly reaching the millionaire's house.
The millionaire's wife asked her husband, "We have so much money, how come we're not as happy as that young couple next door who make tofu?"
The millionaire said, "What's the big deal? I'll make sure they can't laugh tomorrow."
That evening, the millionaire threw a gold ingot over the wall. The next day, the young couple grinding tofu was indeed eerily silent. They were deep in thought! Having found a "fallen" gold ingot, they felt incredibly wealthy and knew they could no longer do the hard, arduous work of grinding tofu. But what if they lost money in business? If they didn't, they'd eventually run out of money. The husband even wondered if, if the business grew, he should take a concubine or divorce his current wife. The wife, meanwhile, lamented that if she'd known they'd become rich, she shouldn't have married this stinking tofu grinder. Lost in thought, the once cheerful couple had lost all interest in laughter; worry had begun to consume them. What tormented them even more was why more gold ingots couldn't fall from the sky, so they could buy whatever they wanted?
Life is inherently without worries; it's only when the fire of desire is ignited that worries knock on your door.
Life is inherently without suffering; suffering only arises when you begin to calculate gains and losses and crave more.
