Everyone dislikes selfish people, yet we are all selfish. No one is without selfishness; philosopher Hume once said, "Human nature is selfishness." Selfishness is the gene of life. In his book *The Selfish Gene*, the renowned British evolutionary theorist Richard Dawkins further analyzed the selfishness of organisms from the perspective of the essence of life and genes.
He pointed out that "a prominent characteristic of the successful gene is ruthless selfishness," and that "we and all other animals are machines created by genes," thus concluding that "people are born selfish."
Although his conclusion has been controversial, it does not affect our understanding of human selfishness. What we want to discuss is why, in life, some people's selfishness is not particularly annoying and is easily understood and accepted,
while others' slightest display of selfishness is unbearable and evokes strong negative emotions.
Clarifying this issue requires a new understanding of selfishness.
