Holi是印度語「顏色」的意思，色彩節不僅在印度，甚至尼泊爾、巴基斯坦、英國、南非、斐濟和模里西斯等印度教盛行之地，皆視為重要節日。色彩節的起源眾說紛紜，其中一種說法源自於印度教神話。印度教的維護之神「毘濕奴神」（Vishnu）的分身之一「奎師那神」（Krishna）生性調皮，喜歡在牧羊女身上灑彩色粉末，神話流傳千年後，形成印度當地特有的習俗。也有人說，因為奎師那神不滿自己膚色黝黑而妻子皮膚白皙，母親便建議他用彩色粉末塗抹妻​​子的臉。

另一種說法，在遠古時代，有個暴君不允許人民信奉毘濕奴神，但兒子卻忤逆他而堅持信奉，於是暴君便指使自己的妹妹──「女妖霍利卡」（Holika）在某個月圓之夜燒死王子。隔日清晨，當人們帶著盛水器具趕去營救時，卻發現他安然無恙，反而是霍利卡已化作灰燼，這便是毘濕奴神保佑的結果，於是人們便將七種顏色的水，潑向王子以示慶祝。色彩節英文中的「Holi」，便是由女妖名字「Holika」演變而來，所以在慶典中，當地人還會用草、木頭或紙紮的霍利卡像拋入火堆中燒毀。

捉弄人和盡情玩樂是色彩節的精神所在，如果你是外國人，當地人一定會對你十分「照顧」！在這個節慶里，不管是誇張放肆地攻擊，或是不動聲色從背後偷襲，都不會有人介意，如電影《世界是平的》（Outsourced）也曾出現色彩節場景。劇中，剛從美國到印度工作的男主角，某天早晨一如往常穿著平整的白襯衫出門工作，沒想到一路上卻被許多「埋伏的彩色軍團」瘋狂攻擊，白襯衫瞬間變成彩色衫。色彩節對於印度人來說，種姓制度亦不需過於遵循，玩樂至上，暫時忘記階級的差異，也忘記仇恨與隔閡。
